The French Press

In this week's edition of "Brewing Tip of the Week," we're delving into the rich and robust world of French Press brewing. This timeless method, beloved for its simplicity and the deep, full-bodied coffee it produces, is a must-try for any serious coffee lover.

The French Press: A Blend of Simplicity and Depth

The French Press, also known as a press pot or plunger pot, is a classic brewing method that allows for full immersion of coffee grounds in water. This method extracts deep flavors and oils, resulting in a rich and hearty cup of coffee.

The Perfect Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Getting the right balance of coffee to water is crucial for the perfect French Press brew. A good starting point is a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio. For every gram of coffee, use 15 grams of water. So, for a standard 8-cup (34 oz) French Press, use about 55 grams of coffee and 825 grams (or ml) of water.

Step-by-Step French Press Brewing

  1. Coarse Grind is Key: Use a coarse grind for your Skeleton Brew beans. A finer grind can slip through the press filter and into your cup.

  2. Heat Your Water: Bring your water to a boil, then let it cool for about 30 seconds to reach the ideal temperature of around 200°F.

  3. Add Coffee to French Press: Place the grounds in the bottom of the press.

  4. The First Pour: Add water in a circular motion to ensure all the grounds are saturated. Fill it halfway to start, allowing the grounds to bloom for about 30 seconds.

  5. Add Remaining Water and Stir: Fill the press to the top with water and give it a gentle stir.

  6. Let It Brew: Place the lid on and let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes. This is the perfect time to extract the full flavor without over-extraction.

  7. Press Down Slowly: After 4 minutes, press the plunger down slowly and evenly, trapping the grounds at the bottom.

  8. Serve Immediately: Pour and enjoy! Letting the coffee sit in the French Press can lead to over-extraction and bitterness.

Why French Press?

The French Press is about more than just brewing coffee; it's about crafting an experience. Each step, from grinding the beans to pressing the plunger, is a hands-on process that engages the senses. The result is a cup of coffee that is as rich in flavor as it is in tradition.
