Haunted Grounds Brew | Skeleton Brew Coffee

A bold, filter-free coffee brewed directly in your mug—full-bodied, uncomplicated, and just haunted enough for a slow morning.

Haunted Grounds Brew is coffee stripped down to its essentials: freshly ground beans, hot water, and a sturdy mug. The coffee steeps directly in the water, creating a rich cup with more body than you would get from a paper-filtered brewing method.

It is an easy method for mornings when you want excellent coffee without assembling a collection of brewing equipment. Give the grounds time to settle, sip carefully, and leave the last little bit to whatever spirits may be lurking at the bottom of the mug.

Haunted Grounds Brew, a filter-free coffee made with Dark Roast Reaper

What You'll Need

Ingredients

  • 15 g Skeleton Brew Dark Roast Reaper, ground medium-coarse
    • About 3 level tablespoons of ground coffee if you do not have a scale
  • 240 ml / 8 fl oz water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar, optional

Equipment

  • Sturdy coffee mug
  • Kettle
  • Spoon
  • Timer
  • Kitchen scale, recommended but optional

No scale? No problem. Household measurements are included wherever practical. A small kitchen scale simply makes it easier to reproduce a cup you really like.

Coffee Ratio

For this recipe, start with:

15 g coffee : 240 g/ml water

That is approximately a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio.

If you are measuring without a scale:

3 level tablespoons ground coffee : 1 cup water

This ratio produces a bold, full-bodied mug without making the coffee unnecessarily concentrated. For a stronger or lighter cup, adjust the amount of coffee rather than dramatically changing the brewing time.

Directions

1. Awaken the Water

Heat 240 ml / 8 fl oz water to approximately 200°F / 93°C. If you do not have a thermometer, bring the water to a boil and let it rest for about 30 seconds.

2. Summon the Grounds

Add 15 g of medium-coarse ground coffee directly to your mug.

If you would like a sweetened cup, add 1 teaspoon of sugar now so it can dissolve evenly during brewing.

3. Begin the Haunting

Pour the hot water evenly over the grounds. Give the mixture one gentle stir to make sure all the coffee is completely saturated.

4. Let It Steep

Allow the coffee to steep undisturbed for 4 minutes.

5. Settle the Spirits

After four minutes, gently stir only the surface of the coffee. Avoid stirring all the way to the bottom of the mug.

Let the coffee rest for another 2 minutes. This gives the floating grounds and finer particles time to settle.

6. Sip Carefully

Drink slowly without disturbing the bottom of the mug. Leave approximately the final half-inch of coffee behind, where most of the settled grounds will be waiting.

Skeleton Brew Tip

Do not give the coffee a deep final stir before drinking. The resting period is what keeps most of the grounds at the bottom of the mug. Stirring them back into the coffee will produce a much grittier cup.

Make It Your Own

  • Sweeten the haunting: Add one teaspoon of raw sugar or brown sugar before pouring the water.
  • Make it stronger: Increase the coffee to 17 g while keeping the water and brewing time the same.
  • Add a little spice: Mix a small pinch of cinnamon into the grounds before brewing.
  • Make a cleaner cup: After the grounds settle, slowly pour the coffee into a second mug, stopping before the sediment reaches the rim.

Why It Works

Haunted Grounds Brew uses full-immersion brewing, which means the coffee remains in direct contact with the water throughout the brewing process. This encourages an even extraction and produces a rich, substantial cup.

Because there is no paper filter, more of the coffee's natural oils and fine particles remain in the drink. That gives the brew its characteristic body and allows the darker flavors of the coffee to stand forward. The final resting period helps the grounds settle so you can enjoy that richness without drinking the graveyard at the bottom of the mug.
