Sunset Escape Frappé
A cold, creamy blended coffee made with Dark Roast Reaper, chocolate, coconut, milk, and ice.
The Sunset Escape Frappé is built for the kind of afternoon when you'd rather be somewhere warm, quiet, and nowhere near your inbox.
It blends chilled Dark Roast Reaper with milk, chocolate, coconut, and ice for a rich frozen coffee that lands somewhere between iced coffee and dessert.
Think dark coffee, tropical sweetness, and enough frost to make the day feel slightly less serious.

What You'll Need
Ingredients
-
16 g Dark Roast Reaper coffee, ground appropriately for your preferred brewing method
- About 3 level tablespoons ground coffee if you don't have a scale
- 240 ml / 8 oz water
- 120 ml / 4 oz milk
- 30 ml / 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
- 15 ml / 1 tablespoon coconut syrup
- 1 cup ice
- Whipped cream, optional
- Toasted coconut flakes, optional
- Chocolate drizzle, optional
Equipment
- Your preferred coffee brewer
- Coffee grinder, if using whole beans
- Blender
- Tall glass
- Kitchen scale, recommended but optional
Chill the coffee before blending. Hot coffee melts the ice immediately and gives you a thinner frappé. Cold coffee keeps the drink thicker, colder, and more consistent.
Coffee Ratio
Start with:
16 g coffee : 240 g/ml water
That's approximately a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio.
The slightly stronger brew helps Dark Roast Reaper stay noticeable after milk, syrup, and ice are added.
If you're measuring without a scale:
About 3 level tablespoons ground coffee : 8 oz water
Directions
1. Brew the Escape
Brew 240 ml / 8 oz of Dark Roast Reaper using approximately a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio and your preferred brewing method.
Allow the coffee to cool, then refrigerate it until fully chilled.
2. Build the Frappé
Add the following to a blender:
- 240 ml / 8 oz chilled coffee
- 120 ml / 4 oz milk
- 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
- 1 tablespoon coconut syrup
- 1 cup ice
3. Blend Until Smooth
Blend on high until the mixture is smooth, thick, and frothy.
If the frappé seems too thick, add a small splash of milk. If it's too thin, add a little more ice and blend again.
4. Pour the Sunset
Pour the frappé into a tall glass.
At this point, taste it before adding anything else. If you want more coconut, add a small amount of syrup and blend briefly. If you want the chocolate stronger, add another drizzle.
5. Finish the Escape
Add whipped cream if desired.
Top with toasted coconut flakes, chocolate drizzle, or both.
Serve immediately while the frappé is cold and thick.
Skeleton Brew Tip
Texture is mostly about temperature and ice.
A good frappé depends on keeping the ingredients cold before blending.
If the coffee and milk are already chilled, the ice can thicken the drink instead of spending most of its energy melting.
You can also freeze leftover coffee in an ice-cube tray and use coffee cubes instead of ordinary ice for an even stronger result with less dilution.
Make It Your Own
- Extra Coconut: Add a little more coconut syrup or use coconut milk for a stronger tropical profile.
- Mocha Escape: Increase the chocolate syrup and reduce the coconut slightly.
- Dark Sunset: Use less milk for a stronger, more coffee-forward drink.
- Frozen Reaper: Use coffee ice cubes instead of regular ice for extra intensity.
- Dairy-Free: Use oat, almond, soy, or coconut milk.
- Bare Bones Frappé: Skip the whipped cream and garnish and keep it to coffee, milk, chocolate, coconut, and ice.
Why It Works
The Sunset Escape Frappé relies on contrast and balance.
Dark Roast Reaper provides enough intensity to stay present in a cold, blended drink. Chocolate adds sweetness and richness, while coconut introduces a softer, tropical note that keeps the drink from feeling like a standard mocha.
Milk smooths the overall texture and softens the coffee's sharper edges, while ice creates the thick frozen body that defines the frappé.
The stronger coffee ratio matters because freezing and dilution can mute flavor. Starting with a more concentrated brew gives the finished drink enough structure to remain recognizably coffee.
Recommended Brew
Dark Roast Reaper
Dark Roast Reaper replaces the discontinued Eternal Shadows as the featured coffee for the Sunset Escape Frappé.
Its darker roast profile gives this frozen drink the backbone it needs to hold up against chocolate, coconut, milk, and ice.
That makes it especially useful for blended drinks, where lighter coffee can sometimes disappear behind the other ingredients.
From the Coffee Corner
Blended coffee drinks are easier to control at home than they look.
Once you understand the basic pattern—cold coffee + milk + flavor + ice—you can adjust the drink almost endlessly without needing a special machine or a complicated recipe.
More coffee. Less milk. More coconut. Less chocolate. Coffee ice cubes. Different milk.
That's the advantage of making it yourself: the recipe is yours before the blender even starts.
